Purim’s Lesson: Why History Must Not Repeat Itself (VIDEO)

Jewish communities worldwide this week celebrate Purim, the festival that commemorates the miraculous deliverance of Jews in the Persian Empire during the fifth century.

The Book of Esther describes how Persia’s antisemitic viceroy, Haman, plotted a genocide against the Jews. Through a series of events, they survived – and Haman ended up hanging on the gallows he had erected for his Jewish arch-enemy Mordechai.

Purim serves as a reminder for future generations. Today, Haman-like figures in Iran, who are fueled by antisemitism, threaten to destroy the Jewish state. But recent statements by Iran’s exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi show there is more than meets the eye.
